The Ministry of Water and Sanitation has issued a stark warning that ageing water infrastructure across South Africa is threatening the reliability of water supply, urging urgent action to reverse decades of underinvestment and deteriorating service delivery. Speaking at a recent public briefing, the Minister highlighted that water network breakdowns, pipe bursts and treatment plant constraints are increasingly placing communities and economic activity at risk.The Minister emphasised that reliable access to clean water is foundational to public health, sustainable livelihoods and economic growth, pointing out that infrastructure challenges extend beyond major urban centres into smaller towns and rural areas.
