Students encouraged to use Central Application Service
2026 ACADEMIC YEAR: MINISTER MANAMELA UNVEILS NEW APPLICATION SYSTEM AND SUPPORT MEASURES

Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela has officially launched the Central Application Service (CAS), a long-term digital solution designed to streamline how students access post-school education in South Africa.

1. TRANSITION FROM CACH TO CAS
Starting from the 2026 academic year, the temporary Central Applications Clearing House (CACH) will be phased out. Its successor, CAS, provides a more integrated platform that offers wider visibility into traditional universities, TVET colleges, and alternative learning pathways. The system is designed to improve coordination across the sector and protect applicants from exploitation. Students can receive guidance via WhatsApp at 081 308 4196.

2. A STERN WARNING AGAINST BOGUS COLLEGES
The Department has issued a high alert regarding illegal, unregistered private colleges that exploit students during the registration period. Minister Manamela reminded the public that all private providers must be accredited by the QCTO, SETAs, and SAQA. Before paying any fees, parents and students should verify an institution's status at www.dhet.gov.za

3. FUNDING THE MISSING MIDDLE
In a major boost for students who do not qualify for NSFAS but still struggle with costs, the Minister announced over 15,000 SETA bursaries. These funds are specifically targeted at students in the "missing middle" and those pursuing scarce skills vital for economic growth. The bursaries cover tuition, books, and essential study costs at both universities and TVET colleges.

4. MENTAL HEALTH AND STUDENT WELLNESS
Recognizing the high-stress nature of transitioning to tertiary education, the department is offering free, confidential support through Higher Health. Students facing anxiety or crisis can call the 24-hour Higher Health Helpline at 0800 36 36 36.

5. ESSENTIAL ADVICE FOR PARENTS AND APPLICANTS
The Minister concluded with practical steps to ensure a smooth enrollment process:
- Official Channels Only: Ignore third parties claiming they can guarantee placement or housing for a fee.
- Accommodation: Admission to a course does not guarantee a residence spot. Secure housing confirmation before traveling.
- Explore Alternatives: If university spots are full, consider TVET colleges, bridging programmes, or learnerships.

The Minister emphasized that delays or initial disappointments are not the end of the road, as South Africa's system offers multiple entry points for dedicated learners.
