The IEC confirms that Zuma's face replaces Khumalo's on the ballot, stating that MKP has informed them
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has confirmed that former President Jacob Zuma's image will replace that of MK Party founder Jabulani Khumalo on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 national and provincial elections.
Masego Sheburi, the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the commission, informed the media on Tuesday that MKP had notified them of the leadership change.
"We can confirm that Jacob Zuma's face will be featured on the MK Party's ballot as the party has officially changed its leadership structure. Khumalo is no longer the party leader; Zuma now holds that position," he clarified.
Khumalo established MKP on September 7, 2023, and it was formally inaugurated by Zuma on December 16, 2023, in Soweto, Johannesburg.
MKP's website has been updated to reflect these leadership changes.
Despite the Electoral Commission's demand for clarification from the electoral court following its ruling that Zuma would appear on the ballot on May 29, the commission proceeded with briefing the media on the election timetable leading up to election day.
During the briefing, CEO Sy Mamabolo announced that the IEC was prepared to print the ballot paper after finalizing the candidate list.
"The 27 million registered voters will receive three ballot papers to elect candidates to represent them in the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures," Mamabolo stated.
He also mentioned that approximately 23,292 voting stations had been established for the upcoming elections, with the highest numbers in Kwazulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo.
"All voting stations have finalized lease agreements with landlords or owners," he added, emphasizing that redesigning the ballot papers was a key aspect of the process.
The ballot paper design will include the following identifiers for registered parties:
1. Full registered party name
2. Photograph of the registered party leader
3. Registered abbreviated party name
4. Registered emblem or symbol of the party
For independent candidates, the ballot papers will feature:
1. Independent candidate's name
2. Photograph of the independent candidate alongside the word "INDEPENDENT"
