Parliament Enters Packed Week of Budget Votes and Constitutional Reflection

Parliament is set for a significant week of national accountability, policy debate and democratic reflection as lawmakers prepare to consider major Budget Votes, convene the first meeting of the newly established Section 89 Impeachment Committee, and commemorate the 30th anniversary of South Africa's Constitution. The week's programme begins with the inaugural meeting of the Section 89 committee, which was established following a Constitutional Court ruling and is expected to elect a chairperson before beginning its work of determining whether sufficient grounds exist for Parliament to recommend the removal of the President from office. The meeting forms part of a broader parliamentary schedule that places executive oversight, institutional accountability and national governance at the centre of public attention. On Tuesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to table The Presidency's Budget Vote in the National Assembly, where Members of Parliament will debate the priorities, funding and performance expectations linked to the country's highest executive office. The President is expected to reply to the debate on Wednesday afternoon, giving government an opportunity to respond to opposition criticism, clarify policy direction and reinforce its programme of action. At the same time, the National Council of Provinces will consider Budget Votes for Home Affairs and Employment and Labour, before moving on to debates on Electricity and Energy and Mineral and Petroleum Resources later in the week. These debates are expected to touch on some of the country's most pressing issues, including immigration administration, job creation, energy security, mineral development, labour protection and the delivery capacity of government departments.
