Gauteng Warns Road Vandalism Is a Crime as Protest Damage Shuts R550 Route

Government has strongly condemned the vandalism and destruction of road infrastructure along the R550 Heidelberg-Alberton route near Zonkizizwe and Palm Ridge in the City of Ekurhuleni, where sections of the road were reportedly dug up and damaged during an ongoing service delivery protest. Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said that while communities have a constitutional right to peaceful protest, destroying public roads is reckless, unlawful and dangerous because it disrupts public transport, emergency services, the movement of goods and broader economic activity. The department reminded residents that damage, theft and vandalism of transport infrastructure are criminal offences under the Gauteng Transport Infrastructure Act of 2001, and warned that repairing vandalised roads places additional pressure on public finances while delaying projects meant to improve road safety and mobility. Motorists have been urged to avoid the affected R550 route until further notice and to use alternative roads while law enforcement and technical teams assess the damage. Diale-Tlabela has called for stronger cooperation between communities, protest organisers, law enforcement and government structures to ensure grievances are addressed peacefully, while those responsible for damaging infrastructure are identified and held accountable.
