China’s US$3.49 Million Boost to South Africa’s HIV Response
Beijing has pledged US$3.49 million to support HIV-prevention services in South Africa over the next two years, marking a strategic addition to Pretoria’s efforts amid shifting global aid flows. The announcement came via China’s Ambassador, Wu Peng, ahead of the G20 Summit and was made in collaboration with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
South Africa, which hosts the world’s largest population of people living with HIV, has struggled with budget shortfalls after the United States reduced foreign-aid contributions, which once covered roughly 17 % of the country’s HIV budget (over US$400 million annually).
Under the new grant, funding will target high-risk groups such as young people and individuals who inject drugs-populations that have been hardest hit and hardest to reach. Ambassador Wu described the pledge as part of “a long-standing partnership” and signalled China’s readiness to expand support via policy dialogue, technology transfer, innovative drug supplies and capacity building in the South African health sector.
