Gerda Steyn Celebrates Third Consecutive Comrades Marathon Victory
Gerda Steyn, a beloved figure in South African road running, continues to cherish her relationship with the Comrades Marathon, much to the delight of her fans. The Smiling Assassin showcased her passion once again during the recent down run, securing her third consecutive title.
As she approached the finish line outside Peoples Park in Durban, the atmosphere was electric. The crowd erupted in chants of Gerda! Gerda! Gerda as she neared the end of the 98th edition of the race. The cheers that welcomed her as she crossed the finish line were among the loudest of the day, with enthusiastic supporters celebrating her achievement.
Despite the evident pain she felt, Gerda responded to her fans with waves and a radiant smile. She expressed the indescribable joy of nearing the finish after countless hours of training and preparation, emphasizing the emotional weight of breaking the tape.
As a special guest for OMOs Stay Unbeatable campaign, Steyn reflected on her experience, noting that this years race felt particularly significant. She remarked that each year, the event grows in importance and becomes more ingrained in her life.
Steyn completed the race in 5:51:10, marking her fourth title since her first victory in 2019. Alexandra Morozova from Russia finished second with a time of 5:55:56, while South African Tete Dijana claimed the mens title.
With the race behind her, Steyn looks forward to indulging in some well-deserved treats. She mentioned her excitement for a glass of red wine and a big ice cream, highlighting the strict diet she maintains during training.
Steyn plans to take a break for both her body and mind, spending quality time with friends and family. She is considering participating in another marathon later this year, specifically the Soweto Marathon, which she has yet to experience.
However, she emphasized that no race could ever replace the Comrades Marathon in her heart. For her, the event represents more than just a competition; it is where her passion for running began and has shaped her career. Steyn aims to convey her gratitude and joy through her running, and the support from the crowd only fuels her determination to return for future races as long as her body permits.
