Umzimkhulu, meaning “a great place and a happy home for all”, it is an inland Local Municipality located in the historical East Griqualand Region, bounded by the Umzimkhulu River in the South and Umkhomazi River in the North. The municipal area of Umzimkhulu is surrounded by Ixopo in the East, Underberg in the North, Matatiele in the West and Kokstad and Harding in the South.
The Fezile Dabi District Municipality was established following the local government elections in December 2000. The district Municipality was established as a category C municipality in terms of the Provincial Gazette issued in December 2000.
