WATCH: What the Old Mutual split means for investors

Apr 20 , 2018

Old Mutual released its full-year results on Thursday, boasting of a 22% increase in pre-tax profit as it prepares to split its business units.

Group CEO Bruce Hemphill said Old Mutual Wealth, along with Old Mutual Limited, would be listed in London and Johannesburg once the separation was complete. But Hemphill gave no indication of when the listings would take place, saying Old Mutual would play its cards close to its chest.

Hemphill spoke to Business Day TV about the group’s full-year results and gave some more detail on the numbers.

Vaping could be leading thousands of teens to start smoking who otherwise wouldn’t have

Apr 13 , 2018

Vaping, which involves puffing on vaporized liquid nicotine using an e-cig or vape pen, seems to be healthier than smoking, a deadly habit that involves inhaling burning tobacco. And for some adult smokers, vaping may be somewhat helpful for quitting. But the practice also appears to be creating thousands of new smokers, most of whom are teens whose first exposure to nicotine is via an e-cig or vape pen. Smoking kills. No other habit has been so strongly tied to death.

In addition to inhaling burned tobacco and tar, smokers breathe in toxic metals like cadmium and beryllium, as well as metallic elements like nickel and chromium.

It’s no surprise, then, that much of the available evidence suggests that vaping, which involves puffing on vaporized liquid nicotine instead…

Study Reveals Pythons Take Care of Their Offspring, For a Little While

Apr 13 , 2018

The southern African python wraps around its eggs to keep them warm and does the same for its snakelets during the first weeks of life.

Snakes, in general, do not win any parenting awards. The snake species that lay eggs usually plop their clutch in a hole, cover them with dirt, then slither off hoping for the best. Most of the 30 percent or so of snake species that give live birth don’t give much thought to their offspring, either. But as Joshua Rapp Learnt at National Geographic reports, a new study has found that at least one species of egg-laying python does do a bit of parenting, showing that a mother’s love has no bounds (even if it does have fangs).

Graham Alexander, a reptile researcher the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, spent…

Rabada makes most of suspension

Apr 09 , 2018

Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has admitted the past week has been “a bit of a whirlwind”, but he is taking it all in his stride.

The young bowler is currently suspended for the next two Test matches against Australia for brushing the shoulder of the visiting captain Steve Smith during the second Test at St George’s Park.

Cricket South Africa are appealing the decision, but the 22-year-old is just trying to put it all behind him.

“It is nice to have some quiet time, chill with family and friends, and get up to things that I normally would.

“It has been a bit of a whirlwind, there has been a lot of talk, a lot of hype.

“But that’s what happens occasionally, it comes with the game at certain times.

“It was a big learning…

According to police, on Wednesday two young men, one of them being 30-year-old Spamandla Xulu, were fishing at a dam on the Gqobhokani farm.

The men were confronted by a security guard who requested that they leave. An altercation ensued which led to the guard allegedly fatally shooting Xulu. The second man escaped uninjured.

The security guard has since been arrested on a charge of murder and is currently in police custody.

Hofmeyr vows that ‘show will go on’ after George municipality withdraws concert consent

Mar 29 , 2018

Controversial Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr has vowed that the “show will go on”, after the George Municipality withdrew permission for him to lease out the local hall for his concert next week.

He confirmed to News24 on Thursday that he was consulting lawyers and that the municipality would have to explain their actions.

“The George town council first gives permission and then takes it away,” he said.

“That show will carry on. At the same venue. We are pursuing litigation.”

He said “being gagged by liberals” was “nothing new” for him.

He maintained his concerts were musical and had nothing to do with politics.

The show, which was part of his national ‘Skree’ album launch tour,…

ENERGY DEPT NEEDS R1 TRILLION FOR NUCLEAR PLANS

Mar 16 , 2018

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene confirmed that nuclear plans will remain on the table but will only be implemented at a pace the country can afford.

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene says the Energy Department will need a budget of R1 trillion for its nuclear plans.

Nene confirmed that nuclear plans will remain on the table but will only be implemented at a pace the country can afford.

The Finance Minister gave his first public address in Tshwane on Monday at a Fedusa conference.

“Which means we must not move away from the existing plans and we’re sitting with the IPPs as we speak on renewable energy, some of them that are due to be signed quite soon, some of them that are already in operation and that have assisted us in alleviating our energy challenge.”

Tenants, listen up! We have some useful hints for you

Mar 16 , 2018

No exit inspection, no rental deposit deduction, simple – but the refunding of rental deposits is a massive cause of conflict between tenants and landlords.

Here’s how it is supposed to work: tenants are made to pay a deposit, which is usually a month’s rent before they move in, to cover the landlord should they move out, still owing rent or if there is damage to the property.

The deposit has to be put in an interest-bearing account and then refunded with interest when the tenant moves out. That is if the property is in the same condition as it was when it was let out originally.

The Rental Housing Act is very specific about how that is documented. Essentially, both parties must jointly agree on the state of the unit when the tenant moves in and when they…

SA to raise GDP growth forecasts in October – Nene

Mar 16 , 2018

National Treasury will probably raise projections for economic growth this year in its October mid-term budget as the country overcomes governance and financial problems that have lowered confidence, said Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene.

Newly appointed President Cyril Ramaphosa reappointed Nene to the role last month. When former leader Jacob Zuma fired him and replaced him with a Des van Rooyen in 2015, the move triggered a sell-off in the rand and bonds.

Policy uncertainty and state graft concerns saw Fitch Ratings and S&P Global Ratings lower their assessments of the nation’s debt to junk. The economy slumped into a recession in 2017 and has mounted a fragile recovery since.

The economy is forecast to expand 1.5% this year, compared with the previous projection…
